More details into the twin blasts reveal some chilling facts that there were 19 timed bombs were found. Defused bombs reveal that these were packed as gift wraps and carried in ruck sacks as those of used by university students to avert any kind of suspicion. Its very unfortunate how a normal weekend turned into life shattering tragedy.
Rediff’s Interview with YSR regarding Bomb Blasts
But you have been alleged to have transferred some police officers who were taking firm action against some local people having terror links.
You are talking without proper knowledge. Any transfer is an administrative affair. There is no chance of a political angle or for the reason of appeasing someone.
You have pardoned someone who killed police officer Krishna Prasad whose case was supported by the MIM (Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen).
What is wrong in it? After passing 15 years in jail if in normal parlance he is coming out, then why…
But he has committed a crime again.
What sort of crime?
He produced a CD provoking Pakistani people to donate for his jihad. He is again in jail. I think you are not aware of it. Anyway… What is your broader message after these blasts?
I am accusing you of coming with a totally distorted version of me and my government. You think that I am appeasing Muslims and because of that all these things are happening.
No, not true. I am only saying that since the last last three years Hyderabad has become vulnerable. Is it wrong to say that?
This is just not correct. We have got a very strong administration. At times in a big state like this things can happen but we are very confident and competent, and we will see to it that we come out of this situation. Right?
Now, lets look at what others have to say about this.
In a TOI article, Its terror, no use denying it.
Just raising elite teams isn’t enough nor is holding out threats to Pakistan sufficient. The key to the success of an honest counter-terrorism initiative lies in painstaking and sustained campaign to strengthen the criminal justice system and law enforcement machinery.
For all our aspiration to be a superpower, the harsh fact is that a lethal blend of corruption, inefficiency and political meddling have enfeebled our criminal justice administration and have sapped the police of will and strength to take on those killing the innocent.
Investigation into the Hyderabad carnage is still on, but there are pointers that the loss of life on Saturday could have been averted.
And why targeting Hyderabad gives mileage to jehadis
Then, the IT era in Hyderabad truly began in 1999 when US president Bill Clinton brought Microsoft along with him. In the years since Clinton’s trip, investments in software buttressed the BPO boom. So, when Clinton’s successor George W Bush too decided to drop by in Hyderabad in March 2006 (five weeks after the Saudi king decided to skip the city), he thought it fit to order the opening of a full-fledged consulate in Hyderabad.
This was significant because there is already a US consulate in Chennai. By zeroing in on Hyderabad, Bush also ignored the claims of Bangalore. “All this means that from the point of view of jehadis, Hyderabad is an attractive target. Hitting Hyderabad can give a massive mileage to the jehadi point of view,” says a senior police officer.
Added to all this the unpreparedness of Andhra police. Geared up to deal with Naxalites, the police has largely ignored the terrorist threat.
Also, why most of the terror probes hit a dead end
Let’s first examine the probe into the Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad on May 18. The Andhra Pradesh police had registered two cases relating to the incident immediately after the blast. But when it had to transfer the case to the CBI, it handed over only half the probe — the part dealing with the explosion. The other part — recovery of unexploded bomb from the site which actually holds the clues — remained with the state police. Why so, remains a mystery.
The result: the CBI has so far not been able to zero in on any individual or outfit. It had come out with the sketches and photographs of suspects, but had to face major embarrassment when one of the suspects turned out to be a Delhi-based yoga teacher with no terror link at all.
Hope this probe doesn’t go that route.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad IT industry forms its own security force. Great, way to go.
The police commissioner of Hyderabad is a honourary chairman of the council, who feels it was not lack of trust on the police. “It is good if they decide to assist up, like every responsible citizen would like to,” he said.
The council is a public private participation between Hyderabad City Police and HYSEA which is now planning to install a foolproof electronically aided security system in the Hitech City.
Already three checkposts have been installed to regulate traffic movement. On the anvil are a central command and dedicated team who will monitor all the movements in the Hitech city and feed 250–odd companies which have become members of the council.
Close circuit televisions will be installed on all the roads, dedicated electronic surveillance system will form a web through the complex which will connect all the companies in a loop.
“The area will be decided as high security sensitive zone where no one can leave any object anywhere unattended. The software is being developed,” said L Suresh, executive member of the security council and secretary of HYSEA.
